Moser Pilon Nelson Wins Two 2008 Build Connecticut Awards

Moser Pilon Nelson was awarded two 2008 Building Connecticut Awards from The Associated General Contractors of Connecticut, Inc. Moser Pilon Nelson’s winning projects include the Yankee Gas Liquid Natural Gas Facility in Waterbury, Connecticut, and the Elmer Thienes Mary Hall Elementary School Renovation in Marlborough, Connecticut.

The Yankee Gas project received the award for a Large New Construction Project. The project was completed using a design/build project delivery in partnership with O&G Industries. Moser Pilon Nelson was responsible for the design of support facilities including buildings housing administrative, control and monitoring operations. Richard Brown, AIA, Project Architect and Partner of Moser Pilon Nelson Architects said “the project was challenging given the very tight industrial site and the special technical constraints of the facility.”

Elmer Thienes-Mary Hall Elementary School received the award for a Large Renovation project. This $16.6 million project included 30,700 SF of additions and 74,300 SF of renovations and was completed under the State Department of Education “Renovation Status” program. This 105,000 SF grade school is the home to students in Pre Kindergarten through sixth grade. This phased project included site work and a new gymnasium/community space with a performance stage, classrooms and a centralized administration wing with several Kindergarten classrooms. The project entailed renovations to two existing buildings while three smaller, outdated building units were demolished. The elimination and replacement of the three smaller building units with a single unit created efficiency in the building plan by eliminating redundant corridor systems and creating one central energy efficient structure connecting the two renovated buildings.

“Our main goal was to maintain school connection and operation throughout demolition and replacement of the centralized units,” said Hugh Pearson, AIA, Project Architect and Partner of Moser Pilon Nelson Architects. “The solution was to utilize the enclosed connectors from the two isolated buildings while the three centralized units were demolished and replaced by the single efficient unit.”
